Qualifications and Credit Framework

You may be aware of the forthcoming changes to the structure of vocational qualifications, based on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). JGA will implement these changes as soon as they occur. Here is an introduction to the QCF and how it will affect you and your staff.

Introduction to the QCF from the QCDA

What is the QCF?

The QCF is the new framework for creating and accrediting qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The QCF will make vocational qualifications:

    * simpler to understand
    * accessible to a wider range of learners
    * more relevant to learners' and employers' needs

How does it work?

Qualifications are classified from Entry Level to Level 8, similar to NVQs. At each level, there are three 'sizes' of qualification:

    * Award (1 to 12 credits)
    * Certificate (13 to 36 credits)
    * Diploma (37 credits or more)

Each qualification title contains:

    * the level of the qualification
    * the type of qualification
    * the content of the qualification

For example, a Level 3 Award in Customer Service. This classification allows learners to build up their qualification in bitesize chunks.
When will the changes happen?

All accredited qualifications will be on the QCF by the end of 2010. If you have any questions about how these changes will affect you or your staff, please contact Pam Morgan on 020 8426 2666, or send us an e-mail.
