The Effective CV

Frequently asked questions

Can you help me with my CV?
Yes. We can't write your CV for you, but we can talk to you about what kind of information you should include in your CV and how you should set it out - we can even give you a template to work with! To get the best results, you should bring a draft CV with you to the Careers Advice session. The video above gives you a general introduction, but your CV is about you; talking about it at a Careers Advice session will help you to create a CV about you.

Can you help me with covering letters?
Yes. Again, we can't write it for you and there is no template because every covering letter should be different. We can talk to you about what you should include in a covering letter; how to set it out; differences between posting a covering letter and sending an e-mail. As with the CV, you will get best results by bringing a draft covering letter to the Careers Advice session.

Do I get anything to take away from the session?
Absolutely! Enthusiasm, confidence, excitement, and an Action Plan. Searching for a job can be daunting but a Careers Advice session will let you know what you are doing right and what else you can do to increase your chances of finding work. You will take away an Action Plan with clear and realistic goals for the next stage of your jobsearch.

Can I have more than one Careers Advice session?
Yes, depending on your level of qualification. Obviously, we hope you find work after your first Careers Advice session, but if you feel that there is still room for improvement, or you would like to follow up the points in your Action Plan, you just need to speak to Merle on 020 8426 2666.

Can you guarantee that I will find work after a Careers Advice session?
Finding work is not a science. You need confidence, belief in your own ability, a good CV and covering letter, good interview techniques, and plenty more. And you also need a little bit of luck. We can help with everything except the luck, but the goals that you and your Careers Advisor set will give you all the skills you need to make your own luck.
